Ash to Ash

Ackroyd & Harvey in conversation with Edward Parker for London Tree Week

The Ash Project is an urgent cultural response to the devastating effects of Ash dieback, centred around a major new commission by internationally recognised artists Ackroyd & Harvey.

Award winning photographer and author Edward Parker will be in conversation with the Ackroyd & Harvey about the commission, exploring the many connections between their work on the mythos, social and ecological history of the Ash Tree.

“Our research has revealed a hidden wealth of industries carved from the ash, a myriad of wooden objects and artefacts that occupy historical significance and domestic use. Mythologies suggest that the Ash is the tree at the centre of the world, the ‘cosmic’ tree. Contemporary science is studying genetic traits to understand how to cultivate disease resistant Ash stock. The emotional, social and metaphorical relationship with this tree gives deep-rooted material for our artistic exploration.”
