ash to ash (study) by Ackroyd & Harvey

Ackroyd & Harvey have been awarded a major commission by Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to create a sculptural artwork acting as both celebration and legacy of the ash tree. This work will be launched in the landscapes of the Kent Downs later in 2018. As part of their research and development for this work the artists produced a series of archival prints of sections of trunks and branches from a felled ash tree. These pieces of ash were transformed in the studio through a pyrolysis method, i.e. being burnt in an environment without oxygen, a process similar to that of making charcoal, which features heavily in their work for the commission.
