Reference Points

In this walk by the leaders of the Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership, we learn about the way in which trees provide important reference points in our ancient landscapes

Trees hold and locate histories; providing valuable resources, marking boundaries and important locations which have had meaning to local communities in many ways.  Much of our remaining woodland and ancient trees are arguably as significant and important as our treasured historical buildings and sites. To this day notable trees are still shown on Ordinance Survey Maps and woods have their own range of symbols, a physical reference to this living history.

Participants will be guided along the walk and introduced to some of the ecological and historical facts about the woodland area we travel through, with a particular focus on ash trees. We will take photographs that will ‘map’ and record your individual experience of the trees and woodlands they travel past and through.  At the end of the walk we will use these images to  record in chronological order a visual record, of the walk.  Images from different perspectives, different points but all of which reference and map the same journey and time frame.

This is a free public event, open to everyone. But places are limited so booking is highly recommended. The walk is suitable for adults and families – accompanied children only. Participants are advised to bring their own camera and sun protection.
