Wonder of the Wood: Photography Workshop with Belinda Knox

Part of the Up on the Downs Big Summer festival, learn how to take beautiful photographs of trees with celebrated photographer, Belinda Knox

In this workshop we will explore and photograph the treescapes of the beautiful Kearsney Abbey in Dover. Celebrated photographer Belinda Knox will guide participants to develop skills while sharing her passion for landscape photography. Through the workshop she will focus primarily on the photographing the ash tree and the surrounding landscape exploring techniques and the use of equipment, however whilst it is helpful to understand the mechanics behind shot making the emphasis for this workshop will be on getting into the mood for photography, sharing the joys of the views. This is an exciting process and which Belinda Knox teaches to both make shooting pictures and experiencing the landscape a pleasure.

Belinda says “Sometimes photographs just seem to present themselves, at other times, we have to work to find the pictures.   Ruskin, the famous painter, said that you need seven minutes to absorb a view and enjoy it. Taking this time may then present new ideas for the picture, new angles, new positioning so that energetically the picture comes alive.”

In this workshop participants will learn:

  • More about the trees  at Kearsney Abbey and how to choose a landscape that might be suitable for photography
  • How to handle your camera and some basic composition skills in learn to take better photograph of trees
  • You will be able to analyse the pictures you are taking and pick your top few pictures that you might want to work on later in photo shop to be able to perfect them.

Belinda Knox is the author of the North Downs Way, a photographic book of the South East’s most loved National Trail walk from Farnham through to Dover.  The North Downs are part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and they are a unique part of our cultural history.
